Orange County, law enforcement agencies reach agreements on school resource officers. Here are the cities impacted

Salaries were sticking point in negotiations

ORLANDO, Fla. – Five local governments will provide officers for public schools in tentative agreements reached by Orange County Public Schools.

The district announced Wednesday that it had tentative deals with the cities of Apopka, Ocoee, Winter Garden and Winter Park, along with the town of Windermere.

The local governments will provide school resource officer coverage to school campuses through the 2026-2027 school year.

“We are grateful to the municipalities for their dedication to our shared goal of fostering a secure educational environment for all students,” District Superintendent Dr. Maria Vazquez said in a news release.

Details of the agreements were not released.

The school district and the local governments had struggled to reach an agreement over school resource officer pay. The district’s offer would have had salaries starting at $72,000 and rising to $75,000. The cities, however, said that wasn’t enough.

The district considered using school guardians instead, but they have limited authority in certain situations.

The negotiations affect about 30 school campuses.
