Pine Hills sees decrease in crime, homicides

Sheriff's Office credits R.I.S.E program

PINE HILLS, Fla. – Crime in the Pine Hills community is going down, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

In December, Sheriff Jerry Demings announced the R.I.S.E program to combat crime after a deadly month.

News 6 asked people who live and work in the community if they feel safer since the program and extra patrols were implemented.

The reviews were mixed.

For Tonya Webb the answer is no.

Her husband, Jeffery Webb, was shot and killed near a convenience store in Pine Hills in December.

"We've been together all our life. That's all I know,"  Webb said.

Every night, she sleeps with her husband's picture.

His killer is still on the run.

"If I can get closure, it won't bring him back but it will give me a peace of mind. I can move forward," Webb said.

Webb doesn't feel safe in the community she's called home for more than a decade.

But the Orange County Sheriff's Office said the area has seen a decrease in crime.

There have been four homicides in Pine Hills this year.

During the same time period last year, there were 10 homicides in the Pine Hills area.

Robberies have also gone down. So far this year the area has seen 94, compared to 135 robberies during the same time frame in 2016.

"The police come every day. They walk around and if you're not doing laundry you have no business to be here. Not for drinking or any other activities," said Pine Hills resident Jenny McGuire, the manager of Super Coin Laundromat along Silver Star Road.

Before the R.I.S.E. initiative and mobile command unit were put in place, she said the business was vandalized on a constant basis.

But lately things have changed.

"I know that they're working real hard to make this place a better place for everybody," McGuire said.

Webb told News 6 the fear remains but it won't deter her from speaking out.

"Don't let me see nothing. Don't let me hear nothing because when it comes to helping out innocent people, I am going to talk. I'm going to tell," Webb said.

Currently, there are four unsolved homicides in Pine Hills. Last year, there were eight.
