ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives are asking the public for help identifying the remains of a woman found last month in Bithlo.
The woman is estimated to be between 30 and 55 years old. Detectives described her as white with brown hair.
The remains were found by two men picking palmetto berries on Sept. 29 in the area of Fort Christmas and Lake Picket roads. She was found 6 feet off the road and would have been difficult for a person driving by to see because of greenery in the area, Detective Peter Hernandez said.
Hernandez, with the Sheriff's Office homicide unit, provided an update on the investigation Friday, showing some images of jewelry found with the victim, hoping that someone will recognize the items.
Several items of "very distinctive" jewelry were found with her body, including a silver ring with "MOM" and hearts engraved on the band. Another gold ring with a pink emerald-cut stone and an earring that would be worn on the upper ear were also found nearby, Hernandez said.
"The ring itself should trigger somebody's memory," Hernandez said.
Anthropologists are still examining the remains and until their report is complete, the woman's cause of death is unknown, Hernandez said. Detectives are also waiting on DNA lab results to help identify the woman.
"God willing, we will be able to start pulling this together and bring closure to a family," Hernandez said.
