Deputies swarm Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – One person was injured overnight in a melee at Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Orlando, prompting a large police presence at the facility, according to authorities.

Multiple fights were reported at the detention center on Bumby Avenue in Orlando.

According to officials, an initial fight involving three juveniles broke out late Sunday at the facility. Orange County sheriff's deputies said it was determined that a "real crime" was not committed and the participants were returned to the center.

A brawl involving about 30 juveniles broke out later, but it's not known if it was related to the first fight, officials said. One juvenile was injured in the second fight and taken to a hospital, authorities said. The victim's condition has not been released.

"Earlier this morning, there was a disturbance at the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center. We appreciate the assistance of our law enforcement partners to quickly resolve this incident. All youth in custody are accounted for and we will provide more information as it becomes available. The safety and security of the youth in our care is our top priority and we are currently investigating this matter,"  said Amanda Slama, deputy communications director of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, in a statement.

More than 40 deputies, as well as the Orlando Police Department, Orange County Fire, were called to the scene, and a special state team went inside the break up the fight, officials said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office assisted in controlling the perimeter of the facility and were on standby to enter the building, if needed.

"The fight at the state-run juvenile detention center has been contained," the Orange County Sheriff's Office tweeted. "At least one juvenile injured and taken to hospital. No JDC or OCSO personnel hurt."

No other details, including what prompted the fights, have been released.
