A 66-year-old Sebring man had brought his adult son to the hospital, with the sheriff’s office reporting the father was having difficulties with his “somewhat combative” son. After the son was placed in a mental health room in the ER, the father — who was also in the room — pulled out a handgun and started firing into a wall in an apparent attempt to get other people to leave, the sheriff’s office said.

The man then shot his son, who was lying on a bed, before shooting himself, according to the post. Both the man and his son died at the scene, deputies said, adding no one else was injured.

The hospital was placed on lockdown and EMS traffic was being diverted to a nearby facility at the time of the post, the sheriff’s office said.

An investigation is ongoing.
