TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two people were killed and six others were wounded Thursday when a 20-year-old gunman opened fire near the student union at Florida State University, sending people hiding for cover.

Investigators identified the gunman as Phoenix Ikner, who the Leon County sheriff said was the son of a deputy and is also a student at the university.

The Tallahassee Police Department said law enforcement agencies responded to the campus and were able to “neutralize the threat” in less than five minutes.

Authorities have not yet revealed a motive for the shooting.

The department on Friday released a timeline of events as follows:

  • 11 a.m.: Ikner arrives at a parking garage at Florida State. Police said he remains in the area for an hour, moving in and out of a vehicle.
  • 11:51 a.m.: Ikner leaves the parking garage.
  • Between 11:56 a.m. and 11:57 a.m.: First shot is fired. Ikner is firing a handgun, walking in and out of buildings/green spaces.
  • 11:58 a.m.: Multiple 911 calls were made reporting a male shooting on the campus as nearby police officers responded.
  • 12 p.m.: Ikner is shot by responding officers and taken into custody.

The two men killed in the shooting were not students. One of the victims worked with the dining program on campus, his employer confirmed to News 6.

During an update Friday afternoon, Tallahassee Memorial Hospital said the six people taken to the hospital to be treated are all in stable condition.

“We do feel that all will make a full recovery. Notably, two patients may be discharged (Friday), a development the team is proud of,” Dr. Brett Howard said.

The university canceled all home athletic events, including its final spring football practices and a baseball series against Virginia, through the weekend.
