TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced this week that he’s pushing for a new law to prevent sex predators from “obtaining kids.”
In a social media post on Thursday, Uthmeier declared that he would be proposing the “Protecting Kids from Predators Pursuing Parenthood Act” to accomplish just that.

“Children should not bear the risk of being handed over to predators or abusers, whether through surrogacy, adoption, or foster care,” the post reads.
During his announcement, Uthmeier pointed to a case out of Pennsylvania where a couple reportedly used surrogacy to obtain a child.
“We recently saw a homosexual couple — including a registered sex offender — celebrate bringing home a newborn," Uthmeier said. “In other states, we’ve seen situations where parents have obtained children through surrogacy or adoption, only to then subject them to repeated sexual abuse.”
While no draft of the proposed legislation has been released thus far, Uthmeier said it would bar sexual predators in the state from obtaining children via surrogacy, adoption or foster care.
“This will apply to people that abuse animals, as well,” he added. “If you abuse animals, you have no purpose becoming a new parent.”
Uthmeier said he would work on the proposal with state lawmakers over the next year.
