Hurricanes and other major storms have been a consistent thorn in the side of many Florida homeowners, making insurance a much-needed service for many in the state.
That’s why U.S. News & World Report has released its latest ranking of the best homeowners’ insurance companies last week, giving a bit more insight into which insurers are best suited to tackle these claims.

The ranking uses factors like availability, discounts, claim outcomes, coverage options and consumer surveys to determine which companies are the cream of the crop.
Compared to last month’s study, many homeowners’ insurance companies actually showed a lower monthly cost sample this time around.
Looking at cost alone, the cheapest companies per U.S. News & World Report are as follows:
| Cost Rank | Company | Sample Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Amica | $96.98 |
| 2 | State Farm | $129.02 |
| 3 | USAA | $129.67 |
| 4 | Auto-Owners | $141.17 |
| 5 | Allstate | $143.95 |
But cost isn’t the only factor that researchers looked at when determining the best companies overall.
While USAA was the top-ranked pick during August’s lineup, the company fell in the ranking a bit this time around, making Amica the No.1 pick for September.
The overall top-ranked companies on this month’s list are as follows:
1. Amica — 4.8/5
PROS:
- No. 1 best overall and cheapest home insurance in the ranking
- Offers standard policy and higher-tier Platinum Choice
- Rated highest in U.S. News & World Report’s consumer survey across categories
CONS:
- Not available in Hawaii or Alaska
- Doesn’t have local offices in every state
“Amica is the best and cheapest home insurance provider overall, according to our analysis. In addition to receiving the highest customer satisfaction scores in our survey and having the lowest sample rates, this insurer offers comprehensive coverage and ample discount options.
Amica has two tiers of home insurance plans, so you can select one based on your coverage needs. The standard policy comes with basic coverage that you can tailor with optional endorsements. If you want the maximum protection, the Platinum Choice policy includes all the standard benefits, plus coverage for replacement costs, water backup, credit cards, electronics, valuables, and business property.
In addition to nine key discounts, this provider offers another way to save with its dividend policies. While this option may cost more up front than Amica’s traditional policies, the dividend policy can return up to 20% of your premium through dividend payments if certain conditions are met."

2. USAA — 4.6/5
PROS:
- Provides added benefits unique to military personnel
- One of the best and cheapest home insurance options
- Standard policy covers identity theft and replacement cost
CONS:
- Only available to USAA members, who must have a military connection
- Offers fewer discounts than some competitors
- No green improvement coverage
“USAA is the No. 2 best home insurance option in our overall rating; it also ranks at No. 3 for the cheapest home insurance and at No. 1 for the home and auto bundle subrating. However, USAA’s insurance products are only available to military service members, eligible relatives, and employees of certain federal agencies.
The company consistently earns high customer satisfaction scores while providing ample coverage options and several discounts to help you save. USAA is unique in that its standard policy includes coverage for identity theft and dwelling/personal property replacement costs – benefits that most home insurers offer only as add-ons. With USAA’s optional endorsements, you can increase your dwelling, property, and liability coverage, or get protection from sewer backups and earthquake damage.
Since it caters to the military community, USAA provides special uniform and gear coverage for military members on active duty or reserve."

3. State Farm — 4.5/5
PROS:
- One of the top options for homeowners with lower credit scores
- No. 2 cheapest sample premium
- Inflation coverage comes standard
CONS:
- Ranks last for most categories in our consumer survey
- Fewer endorsement options than some competitors
- New policies not available in California, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island
“Ranking No. 3 overall and No. 2 for the cheapest home insurance, State Farm is a great option for many homeowners – including those with low credit scores, according to our rates data. While this provider performed below average in our consumer satisfaction survey, its pricing and coverage make it one of the top home insurance companies.
Unlike most providers, State Farm’s standard homeowners insurance includes inflation coverage, which automatically adjusts your policy every year to account for inflation. You can add coverage for water backups, identity theft, and equipment breakdown.
While State Farm already has some of the cheapest rates in our study, you may be able to save on your premium by having certain security features, upgrading your utilities or roof, staying claims-free, and bundling your home and auto policies."

4. Chubb — 4.4/5
PROS:
- Offers one of the most comprehensive policies on the market
- Received above-average scores for customer loyalty and value
- Its complimentary services can proactively identify problems in your home
CONS:
- Falls below average for price and customer service
- Provides fewer discounts than competitors
- Online quotes not available
“Chubb places fourth overall because of its impressively robust coverage and its high scores for customer loyalty and value to policyholders. However, it is on the more expensive side, ranking at No. 6 in the cheapest home insurance subrating and offering fewer discount options than other providers.
This company tends to cater to higher-value homes, and its Masterpiece policy includes more types of coverage than almost any other option in our study. Chubb home insurance comes with replacement cost coverage for your dwelling and personal property, water backup protection, ordinance and law coverage, and a wildfire prevention service in some states. Other useful inclusions are the complimentary risk consulting service and HomeScan technology – both of which help proactively identify hazards in your home.
You can add on optional coverage for eco-friendly upgrades, equipment breakdowns, and overland water damage. Chubb offers its own separate flood insurance policy as well."

5. Auto-Owners — 4.3/5
PROS:
- One of the cheapest options if you have a recent claim
- Ranks at No. 2 for customer service in our survey
- Add-on options include ordinance or law, and equipment breakdown
CONS:
- Customers can’t apply for a quote or file a claim online
- No earthquake or green home coverage
- Only available in 26 states
“Auto-Owners comes in fifth place in our best home insurance rating, with a fourth-place rank for cheapest home insurance. It’s one of the cheapest insurers for homeowners with a recent claim, according to our rates analysis: Auto-Owners premiums increased by a smaller amount on average compared to many of its competitors for those who recently filed a claim. This provider also offers around a dozen discounts.
Auto-Owners received above-average evaluations from consumers in most categories, including a No. 2 rank for customer service; however, it only placed at No. 7 for policy value. It has several endorsements you can add to your policy, including coverage for identity theft, ordinance or law, equipment breakdown, cybersecurity, and replacement costs. If you live in a flood zone, you may be able to purchase an inland flooding add-on.”

6. Allstate — 4.2/5
PROS:
- Good option for customers who want a higher deductible
- Wide variety of optional endorsements
- Many discount opportunities
CONS:
- Residents of certain states cannot get an online quote
- Average or below-average scores in our customer survey
- Did not make our rating of best home and auto bundles
“The sixth-ranked Allstate received midrange scores from customers. It’s the No. 5 cheapest home insurance provider, per our average rates analysis, which also determined that Allstate offered one of the most significant rate decreases for policyholders who choose to pay a higher deductible. You can qualify for several discounts as well.
Allstate has a wide range of optional add-ons, including less common endorsements such as business property, electronic data recovery, yard and garden, and green home coverage. You can also get additional protection for valuables, musical instruments, and sports gear.
A couple of other optional features are also available with your Allstate home insurance policy: Claim RateGuard ensures your premium doesn’t increase if you file only one claim every five years, and Deductible Rewards gives you $100 off your deductible when you join and in the five subsequent years.”

7. Progressive — 4.0/5
PROS:
- Lower rates for newly built homes, among other discounts
- Ranks at No. 2 for value to customers in U.S. News & World Report’s survey
- Offers online tools to help compare quotes, create a home inventory, etc.
CONS:
- Not as many add-on coverage options as competitors
- Charges one of the highest monthly premiums
- Policyholders may need to file claims with a third-party insurer
“This company ranks eighth in our overall rating. It achieved second place for value and third place for its likelihood to be recommended by its customers. Unfortunately, it also has one of the higher sample premiums, which puts it below average in our cheapest home insurance subrating. However, you may be able to save significantly based on how recently your house was built; aside from new homes, Progressive policyholders may be eligible for several other discounts as well.
Homeowners can add personal injury or water backup coverage to a standard policy. Additionally, Progressive has some options for standalone plans to supplement your home insurance, including separate policies for identity theft, jewelry, home warranty, and home security.
Because Progressive works with a network of independent insurers, your policy may not be underwritten directly by Progressive; this distinction is particularly relevant when you’re filing a claim and need to contact the correct provider.”

8. Nationwide — 3.8/5
PROS:
- Customizable home insurance with many add-on options
- Smart home program provides risk detection devices and discounts
- No. 2 for claims resolution in customer survey
CONS:
- Ranks low for customer loyalty and average cost
- Not available in every state
- No green home coverage
“Nationwide ranks at No. 9 for both our best and cheapest home insurance ratings, but the customizable nature of its policies and extensive array of discounts may still appeal to consumers. Furthermore, while policyholders’ evaluations gave this insurer a low score in most survey categories, it achieved the second-place rank for claims resolution.
Unlike most other providers, Nationwide’s standard coverage includes losses from credit card fraud and new building requirements. It has an impressive array of potential add-ons, including service line, equipment breakdown, earthquake, water backup, identity theft, valuables, replacement cost, and roof replacement endorsements. With so many optional coverages, you can tailor your policy to your needs."
