TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced on Thursday that he has filed a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood over the group’s marketing of abortion drugs.
In a release, Uthmeier claimed that Planned Parenthood had misrepresented the safety of chemical abortion drugs.

Per the lawsuit, Planned Parenthood has claimed that abortion pills are “safer than Tylenol,” though Uthmeier said that this claim is “manifestly false.”
“They know that the profitable abortion pills they sell are far more dangerous than commonplace over-the-counter pain medication,” the lawsuit reads. “They know the serious risks and harms from taking abortion pills.”
According to the lawsuit, chemical abortions make use of mifepristone and misoprostol. The former blocks a hormone that is needed to keep the child alive in utero, and the latter induces contractions to help expel the dead fetus.
The FDA first approved both substances in 2000, though the lawsuit says these drugs will land around 1-in-25 women in the emergency room “with hemorrhaging and other serious complications.”
However, the FDA lists mifepristone as a safe drug when used as directed, though there have been over 4,000 adverse events reported as of 2024 for women who used the drug for abortions.
Of these, nearly 40 died, but the FDA cautions that these adverse events “cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone,” as other health conditions or medications could possibly have played a role.
Regardless, the lawsuit says that Planned Parenthood is deceptively marketing its abortion pills for profit.
“In fact, abortion drugs are not safer than Tylenol,” the lawsuit continues. “These claims have no basis in reality and have been repeatedly debunked.”
As a result, the lawsuit is pushing for Planned Parenthood to be fined for each instance where an affiliate performed a chemical abortion on a woman who was exposed to these “deceptive representations” — an estimated $350 million in total.
