TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida’s yellow license plate registration decals may soon be a thing of the past with the advent of new legislation calling for an electronic renewal process.
Florida Rep. Tom Fabricio, R-Miami-Dade, and State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Miami-Dade, announced Monday they were filing HB 841 and SB 192, companion bills that seek to require license plate renewal to be recorded electronically and to remove all provisions relating to the stickers.
The lawmakers said they were inspired by Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez, who made the proposal early this month in suggesting a “common-sense step forward” that could even potentially save Floridians money.

“I want to thank State Representative Tom Fabricio and Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez for their leadership and for sponsoring this important legislation,” Fernandez said in a statement. “Their willingness to modernize Florida’s vehicle registration system reflects a clear understanding of how government can work smarter, reduce unnecessary costs, and better serve our residents. This is exactly the kind of practical, common-sense partnership that helps move our state forward.”
The bills will go before the Florida Legislature next year, with their provisions set to go into effect on July 1, 2026, if signed by the governor.
