ORLANDO, Fla. – With natural disasters being a relatively common problem in Florida, it’s little surprise how much of a hassle it can be to find an effective homeowner’s insurance provider.
That’s why U.S. News & World Report released its latest list of the best homeowners insurance companies this month, providing some insight into which insurers are best suited to tackle these claims.

The ranking uses factors like availability, rates, coverage options, company reviews and consumer surveys to determine which companies are the cream of the crop.
Looking at cost alone, the cheapest company, per the study, is State Farm. The average yearly premium with $100,000 in liability coverage for the cheapest companies on the list is as follows:

CONS:
- Does not have financial strength ratings from most major firms
“Florida Peninsula Insurance Company offers standard home insurance as well as add-on coverage for animal liability, solar panels and more. In our survey, it has the No. 1 score for customer likelihood to renew their current policy.
Note that as a smaller local carrier, Florida Peninsula Insurance has not received ratings from many of the large national firms that assess an insurer’s financial health, such as AM Best, Moody’s or Standard & Poor’s."

3. Homeowners Choice — 3.7/5
PROS:
- Rated No. 2 for customer satisfaction for its value
- Serves as a private alternative to the state-run insurer of last resort, Citizens
CONS:
- Relatively low survey scores in other categories
- Lacks financial strength ratings from most major firms
“Homeowners Choice is a home insurance provider under HCI Group that primarily operates in Florida. It may be worth considering if you have a high-risk house that’s difficult to insure, as this private insurer has been taking on policies from the state-run Citizens.
Homeowners Choice receives more consumer complaints than expected in the industry, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners or NAIC.
