Mayor, others unhappy with name of Windermere High School

School is not technically in town of Windermere

WINDERMERE, Fla. – Orange County's newest high school finally has a name: Windermere High. But many people, including the mayor of Windermere, are not in favor of it.

The school board decided on the name Tuesday, but Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn voiced his dissent on social media.

"Our Town Council unanimously asked that it not be named Windermere High because it is not in Windermere and hardly any of our town of Windermere students will attend this school. I spent countless hours stressing this with the school board members and the chairman and superintendent, even speaking to many of them just before the vote. I feel our council did all that it could to make our opinion known," Bruhn said in a statement to News 6.

An Orange County Schools representative told News 6 that the building technically has a Windermere mailing address, despite what the mayor said. She also pointed out that the board didn't make the decision alone.

The community was given a chance to vote, and Windermere High came in first place. Lake Butler High and Horizon High took second and third.

"I'm pleased with it. I'm glad. I mean, this is technically Windermere -- maybe not down proper, but it's still Windermere, nevertheless," said Nancy Murphy.

Now that the school officially has a name, the next step will be to pick a mascot.
