KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A man accused of stealing a PlayStation 4, hitting a 2-year-old child with his car and attempting to mow down sheriff's deputies is expected to appear before a judge Wednesday morning.
Investigators said Barry Eugene Young, 20, was arrested Tuesday morning after a chase that zigzagged between Orange and Osceola counties.
Workers at a Game Stop store on West Irlo Bronson Highway told News 6 Young walked into their store about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, grabbed a PlayStation 4 off the sales floor, walked out and drove off.
Deputies said they started tracking Young's car near the intersection of Highway 192 and Polynesian Isle Boulevard.
They said they watched him turn into the Saralago Resort, and that is where they said they saw him hit a 2-year-old child with his car in the parking lot without stopping.
They said that's when Young's driving became more aggressive.
Deputies said they tried to deploy stop sticks, but Young gunned his engine, and deputies had to jump out of the way of being hit.
They said he then drove more than 10 miles down Osceola Parkway and onto the Florida Turnpike. That is where his luck ended, they said.
Investigators said Young's car ran out of gas just as it passed the exit to the 417 Expressway.
Young was arrested and charged with assaulting law enforcement with his car, theft and other charges.
His passenger, Maholy Marte-Encarnacion, 19, was also arrested and charged with theft.
Young is being held without bail, while Marte-Encarnacion is being held on $700 bail.
The Florida Highway Patrol told News 6 the 2-year-old child suffered very minor injuries, and his parents refused medical treatment.
