COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida man was taken into custody after driving a stolen ambulance to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend, according to the sheriff’s office.

In a release, deputies said that first responders were helping someone who was “experiencing an altered mental state” after possibly taking drugs on Saturday night.

While that was happening, a man — identified as Stanley Williams, 35 — got into the ambulance and drove away from the scene, the release shows.

During the ensuing chase, the ambulance struck a curb, and Williams steered the ambulance into the entrance of the sheriff’s office’s Operations Center, investigators said.

According to the sheriff’s office, Williams drove across the front lawn before stopping near the main entrance, and he was arrested soon after. Williams was then taken to the hospital for examination.

“It’s not every day a pursuit ends at our front door,” Sheriff Mark Hunter said. “This just goes to show that we never know what we will encounter from one moment to the next. I’m glad nobody was hurt and the suspect was not able to pose a greater risk to our community.”

Other than minor damage to the lawn, there was no damage to the sheriff’s office’s property, deputies said.

Williams faces charges of grand theft and fleeing from law enforcement.
