Orlando prepares for Team USA’s Olympic marathon trials

Event set for 10 a.m. Feb. 3

ORLANDO, Fla. – Preparations are underway across downtown Orlando with less than a month until the city hosts the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for marathon.

During an event Thursday, the city joined with officials from Orange County, Track Shack Events and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission to discuss plans for the Trials at 10 a.m. on Feb. 3.

The City of Orlando has provided information about road closures, detours and parking for the event.

According to Track Shack, 1,500 volunteers are trained and ready to welcome visitors and hundreds of athletes.

Jim Young, who is Orlando’s manager of special events, said the course map was divided into 10 specific zones and three different levels relative to the location of residences or businesses along the impacted roadways.

“In our planning efforts, our main goal was to try to ensure these impacts are as minimal as possible,” Young said. “Additionally, we will be present and on the ground during the event to monitor it and make any needed adjustments.”

Several roads in downtown Orlando will be closed starting at 5 a.m. and will remain blocked until as late as 4 p.m.

Young said that in addition to personalized mailings sent to all impacted locations along the route, the city and its event partners have established a website, a dedicated email and a hotline so that residents and businesses can assess impacts.
