Man dies in ‘accidental’ shooting while waiting in pickup line at Florida school

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A man was shot and killed Friday when a gun went off inside a vehicle that was in the after-school pickup line at Challenger 7 Elementary in Port St. John, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said the shooting happened near the intersection of Balfern Street and Stillwater Avenue, not on school property, as children were being dismissed for the day.

Investigators said the people inside the vehicle were heading to the school to pick up their grandchild. A man was shot inside the vehicle when the gun went off “accidentally” and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Facebook post by the sheriff’s office. Investigators did not say what caused the gun to go off.

The school district said the campus was placed on a brief “shelter in place” order while deputies investigated, but that has since been lifted.
