‘Like it better when it’s like this:’ Oviedo residents turn out for July 6 fireworks celebration

City voted 4-1 to hold their Independence Day celebration on July 6

OVIEDO, Fla. – It’s a Fourth of July celebration – just two days late.

Last year, Oviedo City Council members voted 4-1 to hold their Independence Day celebration two days after the holiday on July 6 at the Oviedo Mall parking lot.

It was decision many criticized, especially because the fireworks-only show cost taxpayers around $46,000.

However, dozens who filled the parking lot Saturday night say they’re happy with the decision.

“I don’t think the residents mind. I like it better when it’s like this,” said Lisa Cashman.

Lisa and Bill Cashman said they believe the weekend celebration is a great idea and brings more people to the Oviedo Mall.

However, they also believe it was also a missed opportunity.

“I think Oviedo could capitalize it on it a little bit more. They could have had more food trucks, made more money off of it,” Lisa Cashman said.

People had mixed opinions on holding the event on July 6 again next year, but most want to celebrate on a weekend.

They plan to share their thoughts when the council decides again on the celebration at the end of this year.
