Disney Cruise ship rescues 4 stranded boaters on way to Port Canaveral

Ship was headed to Florida ahead of its maiden voyage on Dec. 21

A Disney Cruise ship heading to its new home in Port Canaveral rescued four stranded boaters on Sunday morning, officials with the company said.

According to a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson, while on its transatlantic sailing from the Netherlands to its new home at Port Canaveral, the Disney Treasure responded to a call of a vessel in distress around 11:40 a.m. off of the coast of Bermuda

Officials said the ship arrived around 1 p.m. and helped rescue all four passengers of the “vessel in distress.”

“We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide aid to the boat passengers in peril. Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety,” said Captain Marco Nogara, Captain of the Disney Treasure.”

The Disney Treasure is the second of three Triton class vessels and the sixth overall to the Disney Cruise Line fleet.

The ship, which has 1,256 staterooms onboard, is scheduled to embark on its maiden voyage, a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral on Dec. 21.

The Treasure will be the newest Disney ship at the port since the Wish arrived in 2022.

Another new sailing being offered by the port in the coming weeks will be Princess Cruises.

The Caribbean Princess will make its debut sailing at Port Canaveral on November 27, a day before Thanksgiving.

The Treasure will be the newest ship from any cruise line at the port since Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas, which News 6 reporter James Sparvero got to tour over the summer.

Utopia remains the largest cruise ship at Port Canaveral until the even more massive Star of the Seas from Royal Caribbean arrives next August.

All in all, the port’s CEO Captain John Murray says cruise passenger records are likely to be broken again next year.

More than 7.5 million people took a cruise at Port Canaveral in the last year.

The port is expecting that number to break 8 million in the next year.

“We’re going to be very busy over the next few years,” Murray said at the port’s most recent commission meeting in October.

A passenger on an upcoming sailing said the new ships make the port more attractive to cruisers.

Debbie Huey of Merritt Island said she got tickets on the Norwegian Epic to celebrate her retirement.

“It’s just more options for everybody,” she said. “I know a lot of local people that cruise a lot.”
