Cocoa High School student in custody after metal detector finds gun

‘All students on campus are safe,’ district says

COCOA, Fla. – A 15-year-old Cocoa High School student was taken into police custody Monday after a handgun was found with the help of a metal detector, officials said.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred before 10 a.m. at the school, which is located at 2000 Tiger Trail.

“The weapon was immediately confiscated, and the student was placed into police custody,” a statement from Brevard Public Schools said. “All students on campus are safe.”

Officials said the gun was not loaded, and no threats were made.

“We understand how upsetting this news is but are fortunate to have these systems available on our campus to ensure our students' safety,” BPS said.

The teen faces a felony charge of possession of a firearm on school grounds.

BPS started installing metal detectors this school year, with Melbourne High School getting the first one in October.

A school district spokesperson told News 6 last year that all high schools would have metal detectors by the end of this school year.
