Traffic ticket lands teen awaiting 2023 Poinciana crash trial in jail

16-year-old sentenced to 60 days for driving without a license

The teen involved in a 2023 Poinciana crash that claimed four lives, faced a plea hearing on Thursday in a completely separate case.

Ri’shard Ferguson, 16, pleaded no contest to a 2024 charge of driving without a license, and received a 60-day jail sentence.

Ferguson’s defense attorney, Andrew Darling, commented on the severity of the penalty.

“It’s the harshest penalty I’ve ever seen for a second-degree misdemeanor,” Darling said. “And again, understanding the backdrop, understanding the tragedy that took place back in 2023, Mr. Ferguson is ready to move forward and take accountability.”

Florida Highway Patrol said Ferguson allegedly ran a stop sign while driving nearly 80 miles per hour in a Poinciana neighborhood. His vehicle struck an SUV, killing a 50-year-old woman and three children.

Ferguson’s more serious vehicular manslaughter charges are still under review. Additionally, Ferguson’s father has been arrested for allowing him to drive.

Stay tuned for the latest updates on this case.

Clarification:

Ferguson's driving without a license charge stems from an incident unrelated to the 2023 fatal crash in Poinciana, for which he is facing more serious charges.
