DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The stormy weather could hold off on our coast, leaving some sunshine for the crowds expected for the Mother’s Day weekend. Volusia Beach Safety teams are kicking it into high gear now to prep.
Mother’s Day weekend is one of (if not the busiest) weekends for Volusia County’s beaches.
This weekend, they’ll be flying the red flag for rip currents and the blue flag for potentially dangerous wildlife with an influx of jellyfish and Man o’ War around.
Beach safety is staffing up to take on the influx of expected crowds.
“We’ve got about 67 lifeguards on this weekend and that’ll be in our control towers and then also sitting in the red towers,” said Captain Stephen Canfield.

Volusia County has a Volusia Beaches app you can use on your phone. It shows the ramp openings and closings and where lifeguards are set up in real time so you can see it before you get beachside.
“If you are coming down to the beach, we highly advise that you swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower due to the fact we are seeing those rip currents,” Canfield said.
