BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida man whom critics said mocked Christmas with his own holiday decoration, which was inspired by Seinfeld, now has a beef over the separation of church and state with Brevard Public Schools.
Chaz Stevens, who gained national attention for bringing a beer-canned Festivus pole to the State Capitol in 2013, is taking another satirical action after he told News 6 reporter James Sparvero he saw a banner for Trinity Church at Palm Bay High School’s football stadium.
“This is my way of drawing attention to what I believe are important projects and important ideas,” Stevens said.
The Florida Tech graduate who resides in South Florida said he saw the banner during a visit earlier this year.
“I noticed that they had a sign up advertising for a church,” Stevens said.
Now, he’s calling on the school district to take the banner down, or else put up his banners for the church of Satanology in five high schools, including Palm Bay.
Stevens emailed every school board member and said he’s giving the district just a week to respond.
He told Sparvero he will file a lawsuit if not.
“I will go to court, filing a lawsuit to secure my First Amendment rights,” he said. “And if the school board wants to spend $50 to $100,000 defending this case in federal court, and the law and the case law is on my side, I’m going to teach them a lesson.”
News 6 and ClickOrlando.com will update this story if the school district responds to Stevens’ request.
