MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Women’s Center of Brevard County said that last Thursday, someone broke in and vandalized their office on Aurora Road in Melbourne to an amount as high as $30,000.
“The entire building, pretty much, has been touched in some type of way through destruction and just holes in the wall, furniture through the walls,” executive director Stephanie Husted said.
That damage included a chair stuck in a wall.
“We’re really hoping that it was just a random act, someone coming in, breaking into a building, and really hoping that it wasn’t anything targeted that was towards either us as an organization or the population that we serve,” Husted said.
The center has been serving Brevard for 50 years.
Now, Melbourne police are investigating as the women’s center collects donations.
They’re hoping to raise $50,000 to make repairs and replace broken equipment.
Husted called the incident a setback.
“We try to put as much of our resources as possible into actually providing the services that we do,” she said. “So things like this, when they happen, just set us back.”
