7-year-old girl dies after being pulled from backyard pool in Volusia, deputies say

Deputies called to home on Harding Circle

DELTONA, Fla. – A 7-year-old girl died after being pulled from a backyard pool in Deltona, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a home on the 2200 block of Harding Circle.

According to the girl’s adoptive mother, she had instructed the child, who suffered from several medical conditions, including epilepsy, to exit the pool after noticing her lips turning blue. The change in color had previously indicated that a seizure was imminent, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The mother then asked the girl to sit on the outdoor couch while she attended to her other child inside the house. A few minutes later, she discovered the girl at the bottom of the pool in the deep end, the sheriff’s office said.

Family members immediately performed CPR until deputies and firefighters arrived. The girl was later pronounced dead at AdventHealth Orange City.

The girl’s official cause of death has not been released.
