VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that killed a Deltona man over the weekend and seriously injured a motorcyclist. The deadly crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday near the intersection of Howland Boulevard and Red Fox Run. Deputies said a 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a 2013 Volkswagen sedan were both traveling in the same direction on Howland Boulevard when the Volkswagen hit the motorcycle from behind. DELTONA, Fla. — A Deltona man is under arrest, charged with two deaths in a June 2021 crash, deputies said. Eleven months after a crash that killed two elderly men, the other driver, Robert Shavers, was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in their deaths. The 46-year-old, who remains paralyzed from his injuries, was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail and released. Deputies say 25-year-old Anthony Velez first contacted the sheriff’s office just after 6 a.m. Tuesday to report an armed robbery. While investigating the alleged robbery, deputies found surveillance video from a convenience store near where Velez had called 911. They also noted two marked Volusia County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars passed by Velez as he stood there and he never made an attempt to flag them down. Velez told deputies he called because he wanted a ride and was tired of walking.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he’s seen some real improvement at the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home in Deltona. Neighbors have also said they’ve seen things slow down around the children’s home, and it’s been on lockdown since the last shooting, but neighbors are not confident it will last. Deputies handled 280 calls for service there last year and 89 this year before June 1, most of them for runaways. Those numbers include a guard beaten to death and two children who investigators say got into a shootout with deputies. A woman who fought off an armed carjacker and called police as she fled said she saw the suspect raise his rifle and fire at police just before officers shot him, according to investigators. James was shot in the upper left shoulder, left wrist and left torso, a report shows. James pointed a .22-caliber Marlin rifle at the woman as he yelled at her to get out of her vehicle, police said. The driver of the van ran away when she saw James. The woman said she saw James raise the rifle and advance toward the officer and saw James firing his rifle at the police officers, investigators wrote in their report.

The involved deputies, who were uninjured, have been placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates, which is standard in officer-involved shootings.
