The deadly crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday near the intersection of Howland Boulevard and Red Fox Run. Deputies said a 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a 2013 Volkswagen sedan were both traveling in the same direction on Howland Boulevard when the Volkswagen hit the motorcycle from behind. Eleven months after a crash that killed two elderly men, the other driver, Robert Shavers, was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in their deaths. VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Deltona man was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he claimed he was robbed at gunpoint, but later admitted he made the whole thing up just to get a ride home. Deputies say 25-year-old Anthony Velez first contacted the sheriff’s office just after 6 a.m. Tuesday to report an armed robbery. While investigating the alleged robbery, deputies found surveillance video from a convenience store near where Velez had called 911. They also noted two marked Volusia County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars passed by Velez as he stood there and he never made an attempt to flag them down. A woman who fought off an armed carjacker and called police as she fled said she saw the suspect raise his rifle and fire at police just before officers shot him, according to investigators. James was shot in the upper left shoulder, left wrist and left torso, a report shows. James pointed a .22-caliber Marlin rifle at the woman as he yelled at her to get out of her vehicle, police said. The driver of the van ran away when she saw James.
