DELTONA, Fla. – A 44-year-old man was arrested after deputies say he drove more than 100 mph on a Deltona roadway while weaving through traffic with his 5-year-old son in the back seat.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office released body camera video showing the moments leading up to the arrest of Daniel Alphonse, whom they say will be faced with a superspeeder violation.
According to deputies, a black SUV was clocked traveling 105 mph along Howland Boulevard, where the posted speed limit is 45 mph.
Deputies stopped the SUV and took Alphonse into custody.
“Because you were doing 105 on a city road in the middle of the day,” a deputy told Alphonse in the video after he asked why he was being arrested.
The stop occured in the parking lot on the side of a busy stretch of Howland Boulevard in Deltona, a roadway lined with businesses and frequently traveled by local drivers.
Deputies said they discovered Alphonse’s 5-year-old son riding in the back seat during the stop.
“You were going 105 mph in a 45 mph speed limit zone through traffic with your son in the back seat of the car,” a deputy told the driver in the footage.
The child appeared unharmed and was seen speaking with deputies following the stop.
Alphonse was booked into the Volusia County Jail and faces three charges, including two speeding-related offenses and one count of child neglect. Jail records show his bond was set at $6,000.
