Suspect accused of attempted murder after shooting at Orlando apartment complex, deputies say

Alan Florvilus, 24, faces charge of attempted first-degree murder

Alan Vernon Florvilus, 24 (Public Record)

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a March shooting in Orlando’s MetroWest area that left one man dead and another seriously injured, according to the Orlando Police Department.

Officers said they responded to 5572 MetroWest Blvd. on March 4 after three men — identified as Alan Vernon Florvilus, Roderick Barron and Howard Bennett — were involved in a shooting.

Background on what happened

Detectives said they learned Barron and Bennett had argued the night before the shooting. During that dispute, Bennett allegedly threatened to shoot Barron and contacted Florvilus, asking him to come to the location.

The next morning, Barron and Bennett encountered each other in a parking lot and continued arguing, police explained.

Investigators determined Bennett attempted to pull out a firearm. Before he could fire, Barron reportedly pulled his own gun and shot Bennett, killing him.

During the confrontation, Florvilus allegedly retrieved a rifle-style firearm from an apartment and opened fire on Barron, seriously injuring him. Florvilus then fled the scene, investigators said.

However, Barron survived and provided detectives with an account that investigators said was consistent with physical evidence and information from other witnesses.

Bennett’s death was determined to be a justifiable homicide, and thus Barron was not charged in connection with the shooting, detectives said.

Florvilus arrested in Tampa

Homicide detectives identified Florvilus as the person who shot Barron. On Aug. 13, detectives submitted an arrest warrant charging him with attempted first-degree murder.

Florvilus was arrested on Tuesday in Tampa by the U.S. Marshals Service Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, Tampa Division.

He faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder stemming from the March shooting.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Police said no further information is available at this time.
