DELTONA, Fla. – Evelyn Hebert marked her 102nd birthday Thursday at Sterling Court Sky Active Living in Deltona, though the centenarian modestly wishes for less fanfare around the milestone.
“I feel the same. I don’t think I’ve changed that much,” Hebert said, reflecting on her century-plus of life.

The Massachusetts native, who worked for AT&T for over 25 years before retiring to Florida, spent her younger years exploring the world with her late husband, a mechanical engineer.
“Every summertime, we would always take a vacation and go to someplace different. We went to every country in Europe,” Hebert said. “The one I liked the best was Sweden. I liked the food there.”

Born in 1923, Hebert grew up speaking French with her Canadian-born father. As the oldest of six children and only daughter, she helped raise her five younger brothers. Today, only her youngest brother remains, living in California.
“He’s a grandfather now, and I say to him, ‘Jim, I used to change your diaper.’ He says, ‘Oh, shut up,’” Hebert recalled with a laugh.
Despite witnessing nearly a century of technological and social change, Hebert maintains that people remain fundamentally the same. Her life experience spans from helping her mother raise siblings to a 25-year career in telecommunications and extensive world travels.
