ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was shot and killed by deputies on Monday afternoon after refusing to drop a knife, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they responded to the Isles at East Millenia apartments located on Lake Fountain Drive around 12:45 p.m. in reference to a woman who said her boyfriend held her at knifepoint “all night.”

According to the sheriff’s office, arriving deputies spoke to the woman and determined there was probable cause to arrest the man.
“Over the next hour, deputies continued to communicate with the 57-year-old man who was now barricaded inside the apartment,” Undersheriff Mark Canty said at a press conference.

Deputies said that around 2:45 p.m., they requested negotiators and the SWAT team to respond to the scene, and when they arrived, they positioned themselves around the apartment.
“At one point, the man came out of the room and moved towards deputies while armed with a knife,” Canty said. “That’s when two of our deputies fired their service weapons, striking the man.”
The man – later identified as Todd Hannigan –was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting and turn their findings over to the state attorney’s office for review.
