Man dies after being shot during argument in Deltona, sheriff’s office says

Thomas A. Calderon charged with second-degree murder

DELTONA, Fla. – A 29-year-old man, who was shot early Tuesday in Deltona during an argument with another man, has died, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood made the announcement on Monday during a news conference.

The shooting happened around 3:10 a.m. on Flagami Terrace.

The sheriff’s office said the victim was taken to a hospital in Orange City with a gunshot wound to his stomach area.

He was later taken to a hospital in Sanford to undergo surgery, deputies said.

Detectives identified the alleged shooter as Thomas A. Calderon, 37, announcing Tuesday that an arrest warrant for attempted second-degree murder with a firearm had been obtained for him.

Calderon turned himself in on Wednesday, according to an update from the sheriff’s office.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office announced Calderon’s attempted second-degree murder charge was upgraded to second-degree murder following the 29-year-old man’s death.

“(A shooting here) is crazy to me,” said Dennis Roberts, who lives nearby. “Deltona is like a retirement community. It’s not like Orlando.”
