LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A Lake County sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a man during an apparent domestic violence incident.
The shooting happened at a home on Division Street off State Road 44, southwest of DeLand.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the home around 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, after the victim reported that her husband, Harold Hughes, 62, threw a hot coffee pot at her while drunk.
On early Wednesday, News 6 community correspondent Mark Lehman spoke to the man’s wife, who said she left the home and called 911 because she was concerned for her safety.
The sheriff’s office says deputies tried to contact Hughes, who came out of the house with a rifle in his hands. Deputies say they told Hughes to put the weapon down, but instead he pointed the rifle at deputies.
That’s when they say two deputies shot Hughes.
The man was taken to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford in critical condition.
No deputies were injured.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
