Five million above-ground swimming pools are under a recall because a part of the pool’s design made it easier for young children to get in, leading to nine drownings in six states.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of Bestway and Coleman, Intex, and Polygroup swimming pools sold between 2002 and 2025 at a variety of stores nationwide and online.

The 48-inch and taller above-ground pools use compression straps that wrap around the pool on the outside to maintain structural integrity.

However, the CPSC says the strap also served as a foothold for children to access the pool without a ladder. The agency believes nine children between the ages of 22 months and three years drowned after gaining access in this way.

The children lived in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri.

The pool brand names and model numbers are printed on the pool liner on the outside of the pool. They include:

Intex Models sold between 2002 and 2012:

Polygroup Models sold between 2006 and 2025:

Bestway and Coleman Models sold between 2008 and 2024:

  • Coleman Power Steel

Intex Models sold between 2024 and 2025 only at Walmart and Intexcorp.com:

Prism Frame pool

Ultra XTR Frame pool

The pools ranged in price between $400 and over $1,000 and were manufactured in China.

Consumers should contact Bestway, Intex or Polygroup to request a repair kit and do not leave children by the pool unattended.
