PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. – The calendar may read July, but it’s already back-to-school time for some students in Brevard County.

Students at Challenger 7 Elementary are part of a year-round school pilot program that shortens summer break but maintains the same total number of 180 school days as traditional calendars, with three weeks less of summer vacation.

This is the second year of the four-year pilot program, which aims to see if shorter breaks can reduce learning loss.

Challenger 7 is one of five pilot schools across Florida testing this approach.

Another participating school, Wyomina Elementary in Ocala, will start classes on Tuesday.

The rest of Brevard County public schools start school on Aug. 11.
