Melbourne community center evacuated after partial roof collapse

Center secures new location in city

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Part of the roof of a community center in Melbourne collapsed on Tuesday, forcing officials to close the site.

It happened at the Joseph Davis Community Center on Bruce D. Buggs Street, just north of University Boulevard and east of Babcock Street.

The video shows that part of the roof near an entrance had buckled and shifted.

The center was evacuated and closed, and no one was hurt.

A Melbourne police spokesperson said there had been some reports of flooding in the area.

News 6 meteorologists report there was heavy rain in that area Tuesday afternoon, but no word on whether that was responsible for the collapse.

In fact, Melbourne broke a record for rainfall on Tuesday, with 2.82 inches of rain.

Officials said in a news release Wednesday that city staff are working with structural engineers and the city’s insurance company to determine repair options.

The Aug. 2 Back to School Backpack Giveaway — initially scheduled to be held at the Joseph Davis Community Center — will now be held at the Eddie Lee Taylor Community Center located on 3316 Monroe St., the release stated.

Due to the closure, the center’s Seniors at Lunch clients are being redirected to two nearby locations: Captain’s House at 1300 Bianca Drive NE, Palm Bay, FL 32905, and the Sunflower House at 777 E. Merritt Island Causeway, West Melbourne, FL 32940 (inside the Merritt Square Mall).

The Eddie Lee Taylor Community Center will also open to program participants on Aug. 11. In the meantime, the center said it is coordinating meal distribution for those who are unable to travel to the alternative locations over the next two weeks.

The city said it does not presently know how long repairs will take and will provide updates as soon as it has more information.
