‘No clue of why’: Investigators search for motive in killing of West Melbourne grandparents

Grandson Jeremyah Campbell denied bond in first court appearance

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – The young man accused of killing his grandparents and injuring a third person on Washington Street won’t be leaving jail anytime soon. County Judge Michelle Baker denied bond on murder and attempted murder charges for Jeremyah Campbell, 22.

The sheriff’s office released photos of his grandparents, George White, 83, and Mary White, 81. The agency said Campbell killed them on Wednesday night.

The sheriff said Campbell shot his grandmother at the couple’s house and then shot his grandfather through his neighbor’s front door when George White went over to call for help.

At that same time, the sheriff says Campbell shot the neighbor’s granddaughter through the front door, as well, as she tried calling 911.

Her grandfather, Terry French, told Brevard County community correspondent James Sparvero she’s recovering at home now.

“She’s home from the hospital, and she’s doing well, physically,” French said. “Mentally, she’s still upset about it.”

French said the suspect shot six times at his door.

“Bullets flying all through my house with my family in it,” he described. “I hope that they put him in jail for the rest of his life.”

Judge Baker told Campbell his charges are punishable by up to life in prison.

French wondered what the suspect’s motive was.

“That is a question I’m asking,” he said. “I have no clue of why, or what reason, that young fella had or what they had over there that he wanted.”

The sheriff’s office said it still didn’t find a motive in its investigation.

A GoFundMe was set up to help the White family with funeral expenses.

As of Friday, the fund had raised over $3,000 of its $8,000 goal.
