Sumter County correctional officer sentenced 3 years for accepting bribes, smuggling drugs into prison

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A federal correctional officer in Sumter County was sentenced to three years and one month in federal prison for receiving bribes as a public official and providing contraband to a federal prisoner, according to court records.

Officials said Samuel Smith, who worked as a correctional officer at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County, pled guilty in February 2025 after staff found him smuggling 668 grams of marijuana into the prison.

An investigation by the Department of Justice found that, for over eight months, Smith was smuggling the drugs into the facility to sell to prisoners, sneaking them in through his duty vest between Dec. 18, 2023, and Sept. 4, 2024.

Along with the prison sentence, the court also ordered Smith to forfeit $43,901, which represents the amount of money he received in bribes.
