Cocoa police rescue elderly driver after car gets stuck on railroad tracks

Incident occurred at S.R. 520 and U.S. 1

COCOA, Fla. – Police officers with the Cocoa Police Department rescued an elderly man after he had mistakenly driven onto the railroad tracks while two trains approached from opposite directions, a news release stated.

Around 10 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a driver attempting to get his car off the tracks at S.R. 520 and U.S. 1, the release said.

Officials said that communications officers made preemptive calls to the Florida East Coast Railway to slow and stop incoming trains, which successfully stopped two incoming trains just short of the intersection from both directions.

According to the release, a wrecker was called once the area was secured and normal operations resumed around 1 a.m.

The elderly man was given citations for an improper turn, resulting in the vehicle getting stuck on the tracks, officers said.
