ICE involved in traffic stop that caused hold at Apopka High School, officials say

5 ‘turned over’ to ICE, FHP says

APOPKA, Fla. – Law enforcement activity led by U.S. Border Patrol caused Apopka High School to be placed on a temporary secure/hold on Friday, according to officials.

Five people were taken into custody after Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Border Patrol agents conducted a traffic stop near the high school, an Apopka police spokesperson said in a statement.

Four occupants of the vehicle ran away after the vehicle was pulled over for allegedly running a stop sign, according to a statement from the FHP. The driver remained in the vehicle and local law enforcement eventually located the four others, the statement reads.

All five occupants were “detained and turned over to ICE,” the FHP said.

“The vehicle allegedly ran a stop sign. We don’t hear what criminal charges, if any, any of these individuals were facing. Other than the fact that they’re allegedly now in ICE custody. And because of this, an entire school’s operations came to a halt,” said immigration attorney Phillip Arroyo.

Video taken by a parent at the school showed the incident led to confusion outside campus Friday morning.

No one was allowed in or out of the school while law enforcement was present.

The school has since returned to normal operations, according to police.

News 6 has reached out to ICE for more information.

We have not heard back from ICE, and it is not clear where the five people are being held right now.
