News 6 speaks with the voices behind ‘What’s Up Casselberry?’ podcast

CASSELBERRY, Fla. – Meet the voices behind “What’s Up Casselberry?” - a local podcast that’s approaching its 180th episode and putting a spotlight on the heart of this Florida community.

Recording from the Casselberry Police Department’s community room, the podcast team has chatted with nearly 180 local business owners, community leaders, artists, educators and public officials over the past five years.

Host Andy Searles started the podcast when he noticed something missing in local coverage.

“We asked the question what would it be like if we could shine the spotlight on some of the great things being done by great people in our city?” Searles said.

Recent guests include Steven Lerner from Seminole County Emergency Management, who shared vital hurricane preparedness tips with listeners.

“Start preparedness now. Don’t wait for the storm to start brewing or the disaster to start happening,” Lerner advised during his appearance.

The show keeps things fun too - each episode kicks off with a “Dad Joke of the Week” contest, setting a friendly tone that listeners have come to love.

The podcast does more than just entertain - it brings neighbors together.

“There’ve been some stories we’ve covered over the years that have really touched people’s heart,” Searles said.

News 6 Casselberry Community Correspondent Alex Cook, who recently stopped by as a guest, highlighted why these stories matter.

“When someone at home has that emotional connection by seeing what someone’s going through and they’re moved to help, that’s the power of journalism,” Cook said.

What started as a way to share local stories has grown into something bigger. According to Searles, these conversations are “spurring people to action and encouraging them to make a contribution to our shared community life.”

With its mix of serious discussions and lighthearted moments, “What’s Up Casselberry?” continues to showcase the people and stories that make this Florida community special.
