MICCO, Fla. – Fire crews in Brevard County evacuated homes because of a brush fire near a Micco neighborhood.
The fire is near Cherish Drive, south of Micco Road and west of U.S. 1. It’s also near the FPL solar farm.
Brevard County Fire Rescue tells News 6 that eight to 10 homes have been evacuated in that area, but no structures were damaged and those homes were successfully protected.
The fire quickly grew to 15 acres in size, but a spokesperson for the agency says crews are near the mop-up stage.
Fire crews are trying to figure out if storms in the area caused the fire.
One News 6 follower who lives about a mile away told us there was a large lightning storm in the area, but no rain.
They say the fire got very big, very fast, and white ash has been falling in their backyard.
The county opened respite centers at the South Mainland Community Center and Barefoot Bay for residents in the area, and the Red Cross is working to help anyone who needs it.
