‘Better than being burnt out:’ Neighbors grateful to not lose homes in Brevard brush fire

15-acre fire contained in Micco

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A brush fire sparked by lightning Thursday quickly spread in Micco as fire crews raced to save homes.

Friday, after the fire was contained, people living at River Grove talked about the smoke and flames coming dangerously close to their neighborhood.

“This is where the fire actually started, and the wind picked up and it spread down here,” Julie Gilmer showed Brevard County Community Correspondent James Sparvero.

Some homes on Cherish Drive River were built right next to the woods where the fire broke out.

Gilmer recorded incredible video of what it was like to live there Thursday night.

Some neighbors evacuated.

“One of these houses, the siding started to melt on it,” Gilmer said. “At first, you know, it was like, ‘Oh, OK, someone will come and put it out and stuff,’ and then it started to spread.”

Brevard County Fire Rescue said the fire spread to 15 acres.

Fortunately, everyone got through the night OK.

Gilmer laughed while talking about the lingering smell of the fire.

“Yeah, it stinks, but, you know what? It’s better than being burnt out,” she said. “That’s for sure.”
