ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – West Orange County has a new state senator and a new state representative.

State Rep. LaVon Bracy Davis overwhelmingly won the special election for Florida Senate District 15 Tuesday, while her aide, RaShon Young, won Bracy Davis’ Florida House District 40 seat.

According to the unofficial results published by the Orange County Supervisor of Elections, Bracy Davis beat Republican Willie J. Montague in the special general election with nearly 73% of the votes cast.

Young beat Republican Tuan Le with nearly 75% of the votes cast.

Senate District 15 covers all of northwest Orange County down to State Road 408 in Ocoee and extends south to Sand Lake Road. It includes parts of Winter Garden, Oakland, Pine Hills, MetroWest, College Park, Holden Heights, Parramore, Holden Heights and the Oak Ridge area.

The seat was held by the late state Sen. Geraldine Thompson, who died in February after complications from knee replacement surgery.

Bracy Davis, a Democrat, was first elected to Florida House District 40 in 2022 and was reelected in 2024. She resigned to run for Thompson’s seat. Thompson was a longtime friend of Bracy Davis’ mother, and the lawmaker considered Thompson a mentor.

The special election had a low turnout. Less than 9% of the 277,599 registered voters in the districts came out to vote, according to the Orange County Supervisor of Elections.

The two districts’ voters also lean heavily toward the Democratic Party.
