VIDEO: Volusia sheriff stops reckless driver after high-speed chase on I-95

Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s PIT maneuver leads to arrest

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Dash cam video shared by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shows law enforcement chasing down a fleeing driver, who was eventually stopped thanks to the assistance of the sheriff.

According to a social media post, Christian Will Ottinot, 24, of Broward County, swerved through traffic, ran red lights, and hit 118 mph up and down I-95 after fleeing from Port Orange police on Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood then ended the chase by executing a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver, to safely take the suspect into custody.

“I just got to get in on the end and do a little damage to my vehicle,” said Chitwood. "Hopefully, when they show all the video from the dash cam from the deputies from what happened in Port Orange, it’ll put a compelling picture together for a judge that, hey, this guy doesn’t need to be out on the road. This is how people get killed."

Ottinot faces multiple charges, including fleeing from law enforcement, reckless driving, a Florida “Super Speeder” violation, and several criminal traffic citations.

Florida’s new “Super Speeder” law targets drivers going 100 mph or more, or those exceeding the posted speed limit by 50 mph or more.

Under the law, someone who commits “dangerous excessive speeding” can be punished by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of $500 for a first offense.

A second offense could result in up to 90 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.
