A man shot by a Marion County sheriff’s deputy after trying to run over another deputy during a pursuit has died, officials said.
The shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. Friday in Reddick.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a home in Reddick for a suspicious person.
Deputies said the observed a vehicle driving away recklessly and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop.
After a brief pursuit, the vehicle was stopped just north of Highway 329 on NW Gainesville Road, but the suspect refused to exit the vehicle and attempted to run over a deputy in an effort to continue fleeing, sheriff’s officials said.
Another deputy shot the man, who continued to flee at a slow rate of speed before being brought to a final stop in the 12600 block of N. Highway 441, according to authorities.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old D’Montae Shannon, was taken to a hospital in stable condition but later died Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials did not say if any deputies were injured.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
