SPCA of Brevard County in need of fosters, adopters as shelter reaches full capacity

Nonprofit offering adoption fee special through next week

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The SPCA of Brevard County this week is asking the community to adopt or foster animals at the shelter as it deals with full capacity.

The nonprofit in Titusville posted on social media, asking for help assisting the shelter.

“Our staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to care for each animal at our facility, but we are struggling to keep up with the daily demands. We can’t do this alone, we need our community,” the post reads.

SPCA of Brevard shared video on their Instagram account of its team helping the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services last week in Port St. John/Cocoa with an alleged hoarding case involving over 50 Maltese-type dogs. The nonprofit was able to take in 14 dogs into their care, pushing the shelter’s capacity.

Shelby Hicks, who handles public relations, talked to Brevard County Community Correspondent James Sparvero about the alleged hoarding case.

“We got a call from Brevard County Animal Services that they had a case of about 52 Maltese-type dogs, as well as other animals,” Hicks explained. “The owner passed away, so they stepped in and gave us a call, and they called other rescues in the area as well, and we were able to take in 14, as well as a mom with puppies.”

By Friday afternoon, Hicks said people were already beginning to adopt the dogs.

“So, super exciting, and we know as soon as the word gets out that these dogs are available for adoption, they’re gonna fly out the door,” she said.

Through next Friday, Sept. 19, pets over 7 months old up for adoption will have an adoption fee of $7. See dogs and cats up for adoption here.

There are many animals up for adoption but if you can’t adopt, the nonprofit said fostering, “whether it’s long-term, short-term,” can help give shelter pets a much-needed break and allow staff to catch up on tasks.

“We know we have an incredible community that shows up for us and for animals when they need it most. We are so thankful for your support today and every day,” the social media post reads.
