Melbourne city council rejects proposal to rename roadway to Charlie Kirk Lane

Melbourne mayor’s proposal fails to gain support

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A proposal to rename part of a road in Melbourne to honor Charlie Kirk failed to pass during a city council meeting, according to News 6 partner Florida Today.

City council members on Wednesday discussed a proposal by Mayor Paul Alfrey, who suggested renaming a stretch of Cypress Avenue — from Eau Gallie Boulevard to Orange Street — to Charlie Kirk Lane.

Kirk, a conservative activist and and close ally of President Donald Trump who played an influential role in rallying young Republican voters, was assassinated earlier this month while speaking with students at Utah Valley University.

According to Florida Today, Alfrey proposed a workshop to look into renaming the roadway but was only supported by one member.

In concern over Kirk’s lack of direct ties to the area, councilwoman Mimi Hanley said in part, according to Florida Today, “He never even heard of Melbourne. I feel we have other people in this community who could be honored.”

Ahead of the meeting, Alfrey responded to Kirk’s critics who questioned naming a street after someone who was not a politician or dignitary.

“Charlie Kirk is kind of ahead of his time,” Alfrey said. “He did create one of the largest youth movements and got them engaged in politics and discussion and dialogue.”

This meeting came one day after Lake County commissioners unanimously approved a memorial dedicated to Kirk.

Public comment on the issue lasted hours, with the majority of people who spoke being against the proposed dedication.
