Cruise passengers depart Port Canaveral as Tropical Storm Imelda tracks offshore

Ships reroute to avoid the storm

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Port Canaveral cruises departed as scheduled Monday as dangerous beach and marine conditions began setting in from Tropical Storm Imelda.

Before she boarded the Utopia of the Seas, Lacy McClintock told Cape Canaveral Community Correspondent James Sparvero it wouldn’t be the same cruise she was hoping for when she planned her vacation.

“The sun was shining, and we thought we were gonna have the same kind of weather for today, but not so much,” she said as she watched it rain at Grill’s tiki bar next to the cruise terminal.

Utopia’s cruise over the weekend ended a few hours early because of Imelda, same for the Disney Wish and the Carnival Glory ships.

McClintock said while she expects conditions during her cruise could get rough, her group is prepared.

“Just really the waves and maybe seasick, motion sickness, that kind of thing,” she said. “We have our Dramamine, and we have our little wristbands, and I think we’re gonna be OK.”

McClintock joked her group will also be OK because they purchased the drink package for the cruise.

Meanwhile, at the beaches, Brevard County warned people about dangerous rip currents.

Lifeguards have told News 6 how to spot a rip current and how to escape one.

The county said always swim near lifeguards, and don’t swim near piers or jetties.

Sparvero recorded many surfers on Monday at Jetty Park.

“It’s not that bad here,” Jason Clark said. “The rest of the coastline looks pretty rough.”
