ORLANDO, Fla. – Home is a place we all must find, and this week, a touring Broadway show will find its home right here in Central Florida.
“The Wiz” is on an all-new tour with a stop at Dr. Phillips Center in downtown Orlando, before heading to Miami, Tampa and West Palm Beach.
Based on L. Frank Baum’s children’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” the all-Black musical follows Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world.
It features an iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock and ’70s funk.
“The Wiz” premiered on Broadway in 1975. It went on to win seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Choreography.
In 1978, the film based on the show was released. It starred Diana Ross, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Richard Pryor and Lena Horn. It also marked Quincy Jones’ first collaboration with Michael Jackson.
“The Wiz” will be inside Walt Disney Theater at Dr. Phillips Center from Sept. 30–Oct. 5. Student rush tickets are available at the box office only 2 hours before show. They’re $35 and limited to 2 tickets per valid student ID. Click here for ticket information.
