PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – Thirty-five birds were killed and more were euthanized after a truck drove through a group of birds at Port Canaveral Cargo Dock, according to Florida wildlife officials.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said someone in a truck drove through the large group of birds, killing 35 and injuring 13. The injured birds later had to be euthanized, according to FWC, and only one bird survived.
According to the FWC, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office contacted them on Oct. 10 to report that a truck had driven through a group of birds, killing more than four dozen.
FWC said wildlife officers interviewed the driver, who has not been charged. The Brevard County State Attorney’s Office will review evidence and determine if any charges will be filed.
Investigators said they reviewed surveillance video from the area and spoke with witnesses, as well as the driver, who is being referred to as a suspect.
As of Monday, it’s unclear whether the driver will face charges or what led to the incident.
The Florida Wildlife Hospital and Wild Florida Rescue also responded to provide care for the injured birds.
An investigation is ongoing.
