BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 911 call was released Thursday that revealed the moments after a man briefly stole a car from a Brevard County gas station and returned the vehicle when he realized a 1-year-old child was inside, according to the sheriff’s office.
The incident happened on Tuesday at a Sunoco station off US-1 in Cocoa. The woman who owned the car told deputies she had stepped inside the store when she noticed her blue Toyota Camry driving away with her baby in the back seat.
During the 911 call, the woman described how the man sped off but then backed up and returned the car after spotting the child.
“He literally about left with my child when I ran into the gas station,” she said. “He tried to steal my car.”

The caller provided a detailed description of the suspect, a white man in his early 40s wearing a black long-sleeve shirt with a Nike logo, black basketball shorts, and black socks. The man had dirty blonde hair shaved on the sides with longer hair on top.
“He’s just walking around saying, ‘I never would have taken it,’” the caller said. “I’m so grateful he stopped because my son was in there, but this is wild."
The 911 dispatcher stayed on the line as the woman followed the suspect, who was allegedly seen walking near a nearby Social Security office and peeking into windows.
“He said that I was leaving, and someone was coming to shoot me,” the woman told the 911 dispatcher.
Deputies arrived shortly after and the suspect, identified as 53-year-old William Mullis, was arrested.
Mullis faces charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and kidnapping confinement under 13. A judge denied him bond.
